Battle Report - Tau Empire v Chaos Space Marines - Starport Assault

As both forces advanced on the outer buildings of their target, the starport, o'Ralai could see through the dense foliage that these were not the standard Astartes warriors he was used to facing. Where normal space marines appeared unblemished and straightforward, these were horrific to behold. Adorned with spikes, horns protruding from their armour, swirling sigils decorating their battle plate. These were an unknown quantity to him, and so the order was given to hold back and maintain a suitable distance until their style of warfare could be ascertained.

The forces of Chaos had no such reservations, advancing as far as they could up the battlefield. Huge war machines, half mechanical, half something else lumbered along besides the warped marines. Smaller infantry also accompanied them, a tainted mirror of the Tau's gue'la. These immense monstrosities opened fire almost as soon as they were within range of the Tau however the distance proved too great for the reaper autocannons to find their mark.

In retaliation, the hammerhead commander ordered the use of the rail cannon mounted on his hull. A blinding light streaked across the battlefield towards the scuttling human cultists, but despite the clearly superior technology the shot failed to make the first kill. Not willing to lose the initiative while the chaos marines advanced, o'Ralai led by example and fired a high density sabot shot from his experimental submunitions rifle, targeting the Dreadnought. It looked like a pale imitation of their own battle suits, without any of the grace and speed. The shot connected, finding a weak spot in the armoured bulk and detonated. The resulting explosion could clearly be seen from across the battlefield and the nearby chaos marines were caught in the fire. Only one of them failed to clear the area in time, his scream echoing among the port buildings.

Buoyed by his cadres good fortune the Commander ordered the Piranha to advance to a position just in front of the Defiler. Surely it's nose mounted fusion blaster would be able to decimate the construct. Sadly no weak points presented themselves this time and the opportunity was squandered. In retaliation the Defiler let rip with its reaper autocannon once again but the combination of the fast skimmers blinding pace and its disruption pods made it a slippery target and the volley of fire went wide.

On the far side of the battlefield the warped Astartes saw that the XV9s had over reached themselves, jet packing too far away from the bulk of the blue skins. They opened up with heavy bolter and plasma, crippling one of the agile suits and leaving them shaken. This was all the window of opportunity the great winged Daemon Prince needed. He made his move swooping down in a vicious vector strike, and despite the quickly aimed reactionary shots he feasted on the Tau in his clutches, tearing their exo-armour limb from limb, and then mimicking the same ferocity when dealing with the pilots. The Defiler, filled with rage from his failure to even dent the puny skimmer lurched forwards, it's many legs propelling it into the vehicle, wrecking it and leaving it a mangled pile of metal and blood in its wake.

O'Ralai knew that a few early casualties would occur, they needed to understand the capabilities of their new foe, and he knew that their lives had not been in vain, they had given theirs to further the greater good. From his vantage point close to the landing platforms he was able to coordinate a fast paced retaliation. Calling upon an elite unit of XV8 Crisis Suits to deep strike onto the field of battle. The raging warp storms surrounding the planet affected their accuracy and they scattered, not too far but just enough to keep them from being a threat immediately.

The next stage of the plan was for the two teams of Fire Warriors to take the twin skyshield landing pads. In their nimble Devilfish transports they made light work of the task, opening fire as they disembarked, catching a Cultist and a handful of Possessed in their torrent of pulse fire. Nearby, a cluster of Kroot were being shepherded into action by one of Aun'Li's ethereal cohort, and driven by his inspiring words recklessly fired at the demon prince to avenge the deaths of the hazard suit pilots. The hovering demon easily avoided the volley of fire, and the rounds that did hit were deflected by the armour covering his torso. He laughed at their ridiculous attempt to harm him with such inferior weaponry.

The three Tau crisis team, composed and alert after their rough deep strike found their bearings and sighted a unit of Chosen close by. Taking up firing positions they launched a furious torrent of ballistics and energy beams, scything three of the enemy down in one fell swoop. The Chaos gods, not wanting to be outdone by these young upstarts summoned an entity from the warp, one they believed would annihilate all in its path, but with so much action occurring in such a confined space as the starport the ghostly Obliterator failed to fully materialise. Sensing the commotion in the immaterium the demon prince knew that his masters were observing. His laugh turned to a hideous scream as he flew towards the Tau commander. He wasn't going to let those pesky bird men distract him from slaying the enemy warlord. He'd leave that for the Rhino advancing at full power towards them.

The airborne assault was unrelenting and vicious, the only thing saving o'Ralai was his accompanying marker drones, forgoing their standard priority to skim into the path of the demon's attacks, being utterly destroyed but serving their purpose by sparing the commanders life. On the other side of the landing field the Possessed, emboldened by the bravado of their leader charged head first into the Fire Warriors huddled around their transport. Two of the fire caste were mortally wounded, bleeding out on the hard metal plating. At the sight of such close up violence the remaining warriors fled to regroup and compose themselves. They weren't counting on the demonic fury of their assailants and all were bloody corpses in mere seconds.

Moments too late a further unit of XV8 Crisis Suits landed atop the skyshield from orbit, and although they were equipped to tackle heavy armour efficiently, they gave it their all to avenge their fallen comrades. Fusion bursts tearing Cultists and Possessed apart until only a handful remained. The Hammerhead pilot, ignoring his previous bad form during this engagement switched his targeting priority to support his commander, but due to evasive flying the Prince remained unscathed. He admonished himself and made a mental note that when this was over he would request a change of position, so that a better pilot than he might serve the greater good to better effect.

The opposite landing pad was a blaze of gun fire, the lone remaining squad of Fire Warriors cutting down the Chaos marine unit in front of them to around half size, no doubt inspired to greatness by the presence of the nearby Ethereal. Just below, the XV8 engaged the hulking, tentacled Maulerfiend, causing grievous damage but failing to put the demon engine down completely. The battle was in flux, and while both sides believed they would emerge victorious, neither sides belief was being backed up by battlefield practical.

The landing platform to the far right of the complex was a bloodbath. The Fire Warriors, backed by their suit-clad comrades engaged in deadly combat with a plethora of different Chaos monstrosities. Slowly but surely they were emerging victorious. The Possessed and majority of the Cultists being torn up by their superior fire power. The few remaining humans fled for their lives, not quite ready to give up their souls to the unseen gods of Chaos.

The sister platform held a very different story. An Obliterator finally emerged from the warp with no interference this time, and along with the Chaos marines began to whittle away at the fire caste who were attempting to hold onto the strategic asset. Just below, the wounded Maulerfiend lashed out at the closest thing to it, it's many limbs and whips making short work of the Devilfish transport, silencing its burst cannon once and for all. On the ground opposite them the Demon Prince moved in for the kill. He'd had enough of these stubborn blue aliens and instinctively knew he had to take out their leader to weaken the others. He swooped directly towards o'Ralai who was droneless and isolated. His fury was immeasurable and he hacked and slashed at the armoured suit. He bellowed a mighty roar as he finally penetrated the advanced alloys, utterly wrecking the commanders systems and forcing him to eject and escape the battlefield. The Ethereal and the mob of Kroot nearby, incensed by the fall of their mighty leader turned and opened fire. Maybe it was because the Daemons mind was clouded by the bloodletting, but he failed to avoid the volleys of fire coming from the Kroot rifles. They tore through his power armour and deep into his demonic flesh. The howls and screams of the vile beast eclipsing all other noises on the battlefield. A huge rent opened in real space, into which the demon was pulled, back to the immaterium from where it was spawned.

Now with both warlords out of action, both sides lacked the focus they needed to secure the objective. The lone Chosen marine did his best to control the bastion by sheltering inside. With no way to target him, the nearby XV8 team leveled their weapons at the building. They were equipped to take on heavily mechanised foes, and the bastion crumbled and burst apart like an egg being struck by a hammer.

The Maulerfiend and Defiler went into a rage, slaughtering everything in their path, Crisis suits and Devilfish becoming smouldering wrecks in the onslaught, but the forces of Chaos were no longer in control of the starport. Somewhere in the great beyond, the malevolent gods saw, and were outraged. As quickly as the tainted horde had materialised on the planet, they were apperated away, to receive the judgement and the furious vengeance that would be struck down upon them for their failure.

The Tau, wounded and severely in need of reinforcements were stunned. They had no idea what had just happened, and it took a moment for the battle-weary Ethereal to regain his senses enough to order the regrouping of the scattered squads, begin recovering the prized tech scattered across the field of battle, and to order the recon units to begin the search for o'Ralai's escape system. They had pulled through but only just. He was certain they would not be left alone for long, so their work to bolster their grip on the starport would need to be speedy, and the ships surrounding the planet would need to drop reinforcements to the surface with as much haste as possible.

Heresy Era Ultramarine Army Started!

Last September was when it all started. I was lucky enough to go to Games Day, and picked up a copy of Horus Heresy Book one: Betrayal from the Forge World stand. I didn't pick up any kits except for the Angron model, as I knew if I made a spur of the moment choice it would get very expensive very fast.

Cataphractii
Recon Squad
For the past few months I've been reading the army list contained in that great tome, generating many lists, each one completely different. I love the flexibility it offers. From the shear amount of unit choices, to the countless wargear options, and all the rites of War that change your force organisation.

My first few lists were attempts to shoehorn all of the cool shit into one army. There wasn't really a theme, or a strategy behind it other than what looks awesome. This process produced some wildly expensive and sprawling Apoc sized lists, everything is just amazing. I had to rethink my approach to this.

Last month, I attended the Forge World Open Day and as always they had a lot of new kits on show. With the majority of options in the book now available it was time to knuckle down and come up with a feasible list to work towards. The Recon Squad in my opinion are some of the best looking sculpts for a Space Marine ever, and I knew I had to have them in my army somewhere. What this sparked was the idea of a fast moving, scouting and recon army. Wildly different from any army I've previously made. I'm usually a complete Elites fanboy, I love terminators and Crisis Suits, so stepping wholeheartedly into the Fast Attack slot was new territory for me.

Here's the 1500 point list I've come up with -

  • Praetor on a Jetbike.
  • A 10 man Assault Squad.
  • 10 man Tactical Squad in a Rhino.
  • An Outrider bike Squad.
  • 5 Recon Space Marines.
  • Cataphractii Terminators with loads of different weapons.
  • A Land Raider Proteus for the Terminators.
  • Finally a Jetbike Squadron.

The Proteus
Jetbikes!
With that sorted, I started planning what I'd need to order to get the ball rolling. Thankfully I just got my bond back from the old flat, and as I'd already paid the bond on the new house it was kind of surplus. This meant I could order a sizable chunk of my army in one go and leave the smaller kits for ordering every now and then.

Yesterday my order got dropped off by UPS and I was like a kid at christmas, opening each bag, seeing how great the casting on each part was, chopping off the huge blocks of resin to condense the whole thing down. In total I ordered a recon squad, a unit of outrider bikes, a squadron of jetbikes, some Cataphractii terminators and a land raider Proteus. A very daunting amount of resin. Add that to the five mkIV marines and five mkII assault marines I already have and it's a good start to the army. But starting an army has never been a problem for me, it's the finishing it that I need to work on!

Shit loads of 'tank traps'
Outrider squad
Over the course of I don't know how long I'll be posting regular updates of how the Ultramarines are coming together, and hopefully I'll be able to have a game of 30k in the near future!

Have you started a Heresy era army? How did you go about picking a list? Let me know as I'd love to hear what you think about all this!

So, those of you following the #warmongers over on twitter might have spotted the recent trend (not a pun) of having a hashtag for each day of the week to post stuff under. It started with #MiniatureMonday which was and is fantastic, however it was used for all different types of hobby progress, from finished models, to WIP shots, and so on. In a stroke of genius a bright spark (not sure who, please let me know and I'll edit) split the week into nice categories.

Today is Wednesday and so it's time to show off a Work In Progress. I think this is my first use of this particular hashtag, which is surprising since almost all my collection is a WIP!

I've been working on my Forge World Jetbikes today. I'd assembled the kits last week but this was my first chance to slap some paint on them. All I've got so far is a first coat of blue, a bit of metal and a brief outline of where the white stripes are going to go.

What I also got done today, and not a WIP, were the bases they'll be mounted on. I ordered quite a few different size bases from a great chap named Roy, and his company Fantascape. These are his 60mm artillery bases, which I drilled a hole into to mount the flying stick. He does loads of different styles, and the really great thing about his products are they come in so many different shapes and sizes, covering very nearly every type of base you'll need for a whole army.

Please have a look at his site/shop and follow him on twitter / facebook. Cheers.

Battle Mission - An Unexpected Foe

This is the second mission of the mini campaign. It's meant to simulate an attacking force discovering a well hidden defender. Some tweaks might be needed to give the attacker some help, as the defender gets to start in a strong position. Or, if like me and you like a challenge go for it as is!

THE ARMIES
Choose armies as per normal, with the exception that no Fortifications may be taken by the attacker.

THE BATTLEFIELD
The battlefield is a non-standard layout.

As per the main rulebook, any fortifications are placed first. Then set-up remaining terrain either by consensus or using the random method.

DEPLOYMENT
Before deploying their forces, players should first roll for their Warlord Traits, and then deploy.

The deployment map is as follows:
The defending player deploys his force in the centre of the table (red zone). The limits of the deployment zone are 12" from the table edge.

The attacker does not deploy their force. Instead, he must roll a D4 for each unit. That indicates which board edge it moves on from in the first turn (yellow zone).

FIRST TURN
The attacker always has first turn.

GAME LENGTH
This mission uses variable game length.

VICTORY CONDITIONS
At the end of the game, the player who has scored the most Victory Points wins the game.

Primary Objective
For every 50 points of a unit that has been completely removed from the board 1 Victory Point is awarded.
eg. 60 points of a unit killed but unit still on board = 0VP
200 points of a unit killed wiping it from the board = 4VP

Secondary Objectives
Slay the Warlord, Linebreaker, First Blood.

MISSION SPECIAL RULES
Each defending unit begins the game with Stealth and Shrouded. Once that unit has been shot or assaulted for the first time it no longer has those USRs (unless it has them anyway).
Reserves.

Prelude to An Unexpected Foe

The Eldar had for the longest of times been a dominant, albeit secretive presence in the Caerphillax Sector. On many worlds the Eldar remained shrouded and obscured from view and from the sensor arrays of space faring ships either travelling through the sector or in orbit around various planets. On some worlds where their presence had been discovered war was breaking out.

One such world was Kotheous, with recent confrontations with a small but deadly Space Wolves contingent. However on Thrask the mysterious xenos were hidden, for the time being. A nearby outbreak of fighting was of no immediate concern to them, their reasons for being on the planet were to serve a higher purpose and the squabblings of less educated races were of no consequence to them.

In the surrounding plains of the star port, Aun'Li and his ethereal comrades, still having to make do without the great but heavily injured o'Ralai, were heavily consumed with the replenishment of their battered but righteous cadre. Common Tau doctrine stated that fortification of positions was not a feasible strategy, and so advance parties were sent out in all directions to observe the Gue'la they had landed on the planet to absorb into the greater good. Despite the victory they had just achieved, tensions were running high and no one wanted to be the one who failed to spot another attack from the foul forces of Chaos. Possibly due to this blinkered focus, or the outstanding stealth capabilities of the Eldar, but none of the Eldar rangers or scout jetbikes were spotted. Their heat signatures and engine noise kept well hidden by ancient knowledge of technology.

As the Tau advanced, the concealed Eldar kept close watch, observing to see what the latest visitors to Thrask were up to. They weren't looking for a conflict but were on high alert just in case lethal force had to be employed. Nothing could stand between them and their mysterious objective they'd worked towards for so long in the Caerphillax sector.

Devilfish crested the peak of yet another rocky outcrop to be confronted with further plains. The landscape of this world was proving to be rather mundane, not that it mattered when there was a population to enlighten and envelop into the greater good. That being said, something didn't look quite right about this particular stretch of low land. Everything appeared too perfect, and repetitive, almost like a painting rather than real life. To a casual passer by, or a lesser race, this would probably have gone unnoticed. Quick bursts of communication erupted over the internal comms feed, and while most agreed that there was no cause to slow the advance, a concession was made that the wide area should be approached from all angles, the speed and manoeuvrability of their vehicles and equipment enabling them the easily approach the picture perfect plains from all sides. That was the first mistake the Eldar would punish them for...

Miniature Monday - Necron Immortals

Yes, I've finally finished some models instead of just building, undercoating and slapping on the base colours.

I'd had these Necron Immortals sitting on their shelf for quite a while. All the metal work had been done long ago, I just needed to do the green and black on the guns to finish them. Why hadn't I done this sooner! As with all my Crons they're fairly basic but look ok as a horde when all together.

So that was my first #MiniatureMonday in ages. Fingers crossed I can get something done for next week too.

In a shocking flurry of activity I have another completed bit of kit, that's two in two days! As with the Immortals yesterday, I've had the Wall of Martyrs set for a while, since Christmas in fact. Here's the latest finished section.

While I was painting it I'd completely forgotten how I'd done the metal 'shields' on the other one. Convinced they were gold I ploughed on, then when taking the next photo realised I'm going to have a mix and match effect, damn! So here's everything I've got finished from the big box so far.

Hopefully ready for next week will be one of the defence line trenches, watch this space!

Army Lists for 'An Unexpected Foe'

We'd agreed to play another 1500 point game. I was addamant in my mind that was the size of list I'd been working on and revising. Sunday morning rolls around and I start to pack my things ready to go. I check my Moleskine, I check on Evernote, I can't find the fucking list anywhere. I'd apparently only got as far as a 1000 pointer! I quickly threw together another 500 but wasn't too pleased with it. Oh well. So here's what I ended up with.

Commander with 2 bodyguard. Armed with missile pods, a few drones and iridium armour.
An Ethereal.
3 squads of 12 fire warriors.
6 path finders.
A 3 man stealth team.
2 Riptides!
2 XV88s, armed with each option.
A railhead.
Cadre Fireblade.
Sunshark interceptor flyer.
I think that's about it, it was a while ago!

My friend was giving the brand new Eldar a whirl. The codex had come out just the day before but he'd managed to do what I couldn't and plan properly! Here's what he took from the lovely new codex.

An avatar, with a few boosts.
5x Rangers.
3x Jetbikes.
10x Dire Avengers with Exarch upgrade.
6x Howling Banshees with Exarch upgrade.
6x Fire Dragons with Exarch upgrade.
7x Warp Spiders with Exarch upgrade.
4x Dark Reapers with Exarch upgrade.
2x War Walkers with some stuff.
A Wraith Lord!
And finally a bastion with a Quad Gun.

Definitely more of an Aspect Warrior list than the Craftworld style I'd faced before. Fun times ahead!
Next up is the narrative battle report we forged...

Battle Report - An Unexpected Foe - Tau Empire v Eldar 1500 points.

The recon cadre advanced slowly on the mysterious plains, forming a three pronged pincer with the elite Crisis suits held back ready to deep strike at the first sign of trouble. Sub-commander shas'o'Taal was sure that through boldness victory would be achieved, no matter what.

As all units moved forward, the first signs that this was no ordinary place appeared. From out of nowhere an old imperial bastion opened fire. It's massive quad gun intercepting the fast moving Tau as they manuevered into position. The Piranha was moving too fast for it though and the heavy shots zipped past. All units were now on high alert, knowing that they might have walked straight into another Chaos trap. It was the eagle-eyed spotter of the lucky Piranha that was first to dismiss the fear of more warped Astartes. Hazy and somehow not quite there, but visible all the same, loomed a War Walker construct of the Eldar. A brace of fusion blaster fire emitted from the Piranhas nose and it glanced the delicate biped but did no serious damage. He was fully visible now, appearing on every Taus' tactical displays. Hammerhead commander MisStrike, ready to make up for his sub-par performance in the previous conflict charged up his formidable main weapon and the energy beam lanced towards the walker. The shot connected and it detonated, totally destroying the Eldar machine. The ensuing blast was catastrophic, catching a nearby Dire Avenger squad that had been hidden from sight. The Exarch and two of his men were incinerated or lacerated by the shrapnel and fell on the spot. Tank commander MisStrike had redeemed himself.

Not wanting to be miss out on the fighting, a unit of Fire Warriors disembarked from their Devilfish, forming up around their Ethereal to protect the wise but fragile leader from the ravages of war.  From their position they could see the ghostly outlines of heavily armed Eldar perched high on a nearby ruin. Their pulse rifles were lacking in range, but the more heavily armed Broadsides had more than enough power in its twin-linked heavy rail rifle to take a shot. The shot connected, and the last that was seen of a Dark Reaper was his body tumbling off the building.

The impressive XV104, not deterred by it's failure to wound the nearby Rangers fired up its huge jet pack, leaped a vast distance to try and circle around the enemy close by. Unfortunately it wasn't far enough. More units than were initially visible moved in the confront the towering mech. Warp Spiders using their warp jump generators crossed the battlefield at a frightening pace, and between them, the Dire Avengers and Rangers, soon had the Riptide at critical levels. All that was left to do was for the last remaining War Walker and the almighty Avatar to unleash their arsenal, and the latest innovation in Tau technology was wiped from existence.

On the other side of the Eldar outpost things were not going in the Taus' favour either. A spirit controlled Wraith Lord had made his presence felt with a burst of shooting that immobilised the empty Devilfish. It was now a sitting duck and the Fire Dragons made short work of the still skimmer. Four shots penetrated it's hull causing a massive detonation, charring a couple of the nearby Fire Warriors in the inferno. Lit up by such an intense fire the Ethereal's bodyguard were targeted by all surrounding units. Incredibly quick Jetbikes rounded the corner and the Dark Reapers, recovered from the loss of a brother, made short work of over half the remaining squad.

Realising that drastic action needed to be taken before all was lost, sub-Commander o'Taal gave the order for all XV8's to enter the fray. Two units of aptly named Crisis suits, one of which consisting of him and his bodyguard, deep struck hard and aggressively in an effort to stem the tide of destruction these Eldar were wreaking. His first action was to bring the formidable weaponry of their suits to bear on a unit of Howling Banshees lurking in cover. With a swift verbal command he activated his Multi-Spectrum Sensor suite and the hail of fire was too much for the Banshees. When the dust settled only the Exarch remained. Within a split second the Broadside unleashed hell with his SMS obliterating the last traces of the aspect warriors.

The other XV8 team, more suited to tank and monster hunting, had the Wraith Lord in their arc of fire. The technology inside the shas'vre's Puretide Engram Neurochip allowing them to mortally wound the spindly construct but ultimately failed to put it down for good. Realising the imminent danger of a swift counter attack all six suits jumped as far as possible out of the danger zone, time would tell if it was far enough.

Around the central kill zone minor altercations were continuing. The Fire Warriors and inspiring Rthereal attempted to take out the Fire Dragons that had so far severely hampered their progress. Despite the Ethereals' invocation of the elements they were unable to find their mark amongst the base of the ruined building. The remaining firepower of the Tau was similarly ineffective, sometimes glancing a lucky hit but failing to make any meaningful contribution to the battle.

Retribution for the Tau upstarts boldness was swift and thorough. In every direction death was to be found. From the two Stealth suits mown down by an emplaced weapon in the Eldar fortification, to the deadly Dire Avengers obliterating the tanking hunting XV8 Crisis team. But the most grievous of all the damage dealt was to come from the Warp Spiders. Able to easily target the bulk of the XV8-02 Iridium armour since the accompanying gun drones had already succumbed to fire, they pounced and by the time they were done, the once proud sub-commander was no more. His final thoughts were that he hoped he had given his life to the greater good.

Without proper leadership the morale of the Tau dropped heavily. Their grand plans seeming to crumble before their very eyes. The final member of the Stealth team being taken out by the Eldars' own stealthy Ranger unit. Attempting the avenge the death of the cadre leader the SMS of the distant Broadside lit up the skies as the projectiles screamed towards the Warp Spiders. Two were slain in the ensuing blast but the squad remained, taunting the enemy with their presence.

What remained of the cadre was crumbling fast. They'd lost too much to be able to hold their ground and put up a decent counter attack, but without the command of a high ranking leader to order a tactical retreat, the only thing they could do was to cling on as long as possible and attempt to deal as much damage as they could.

The Piranha, skimming around the edge of the battle field managed to loose off a lucky fusion blast taking out the lone War Walker but nerves had got to the remaining Tau. Their attempts to take down the fearsome fiery Avatar of Khaine had failed miserably, and his unstoppable and frighteningly fast advances soon made short work of the Devilfish nearby. The flittering Warp Spiders continued their dance of death through the devastated cadre and struck the final blow against the XV88 Broadside still standing his ground.

As the metal suit buckled and twisted, falling to the scorched ground the battle was over. The Tau had suffered a grievous defeat at the hands of such a mystical and enigmatic foe. From way up in orbit, reports were flooding in to commander o'Ralais chamber. He would not forget this slight on his honour or let it rest. He would plan better, harder, and be prepared for the next inevitable encounter in his mission to annex the planet of Thrask.

I've made some small progress on my Wall of Martyrs over the past week, getting one run of the actual trench bits fully painted. Here's how it all looks together.

That leaves me with two more long stretches to finish and a handful of the 'caps' for the ends. I'm hoping to have it all finished in time for the launch of apocalypse, which is rumoured to have some new scenery that fits in with the Imperial Defence Line.

Thanks for looking, stay tuned next Tuesday to see if I get any more done!

New Apocalypse Incoming!

So there rumours and leaked pics of the updated Apoc expansion have been around for a few weeks now, starting with these two -

The Khorne Lord of Battles looks a little strange from that angle, but fro a different side it looked like he's got all kinds of chaosy shit on his back to fill the 'gaps'. The huge necron megalith looks amazing. It's rumoured to be a Tesseract Vault, definitely badass.

Next to arrive were the shots of the new Space Marine leaders. I'm hoping these don't replace the old kit, and can exist side by side.

I think that all of these are going to look great in my marine army. The Lord Executioner looks like he's come straight out of the Space Marine video game, the Master of Relics has got some great details, but I'm not sure on having a skull on both kneecaps! the Master of Rites and the Master of the Marches both look very gothic and 40k, really enjoying these ones.

Finally it's some terrain, and all of these are meant to fit in with the Wall of Martyrs / Imperial Defence Line.

They each look really cool, the size of the gun on the Aquila Strongpoint is huge, the Firestorm Redoubt looks very much like the existing bunker, and the Vengeance Weapons Battery is really cool to have scattered along the defence line.

So that's all I've found so far. It's looking really pricey, and it's a dead cert that those space marine masters are going to be finecast. Cheers!

I've been working on this dynamic duo quite a bit over the past few days. The one one the left is a bit further along, I've just finished doing the grey edge highlighting on him. One thing I have noticed is that if I'm not careful the edging just rubs off with mild handling. Does anyone have any tips to prevent this please? Maybe varnish?

WIP Wednesday - Some random bits and bobs.

It's been a couple of weeks since my last WIPWednesday post (and any post for that matter). I've been busy working on my Wall of Martyrs and all my Tau Empire in that time, but today I just couldn't face doing any more on them. I was looking at the shelves of miniatures in the Warrior Lodge trying to decide what to work on, and ended up grabbing a completely random handful of bare plastic and resin. Here's what I got done...

From left to right, I finally got the Dark Angel Captain ready for painting that my mate had given me in January for my Birthday.
The big boy in the back is a Necron Canoptek Spider that was still in the shrink wrap!
The Forge World Event Only Death Korp of Kreig Quartermaster had been laying on the shelves ever since picking him up at the Open Day in April.
Anrakyr the Traveller was donated from the same friend as above. It's Finecast, and definitely is a great (if that's the appropriate word) example of how shit it can be. He'd got a better cast replacement for his Cron force and this dude was going spare, thanks mate!
On the back row is an Ork Deffcopter from the old Assault on Black Reach box game. Does anyone know what size flying bases these things should go on please?
Finally it's Radagast the Brown, from the limited edition Hobbit Escape from Goblin Town box. Now don't worry I haven't gone mental and got into this shit, I just really like the model (he's holding a hedgehog!) and my good friend and Twitter Warmonger @nationoflee (please go and follow him now!) was selling him so I jumped at the opportunity. Can't wait to get him painted up!

So that's what I've done with my day, let me know how your hobby progress is going if you like!

I'm not dead!

Hello everyone! As the title suggests, I am indeed still here, although my time to blog and dedicate to the hobby has been rather limited recently.

I have been chipping away at a few bits here and there, maybe it's the summery weather we are enjoying in Wales, maybe it's hobby burnout, maybe it's just laziness!

I'll be once again doing my best to reinvigorate my blogging frequency, and I'm starting to produce some more youtube videos. Here's one I did the other day!

Related to my Heresy hobby progress, this beautiful tank was announced yesterday, the Sicaran Battle Tank. This might be one of the best looking vehicles ever built!

Hopefully it won't be too long until my next update, with a bit more content...

White Dwarf (400) - April 2013

As you can tell by the fact I'm reviewing April's edition in the middle of August, I haven't written a review in fucking ages. I guess I just lost interest in the new format, and it's fairly standard layout. It's a shame because there have been some great releases over the past five months, so I'm going to do a quick re-cap of each month, hopefully in time for the release of September's issue and the coming of the Space Marines! So let's crack on with Aprils.

This was the month of the Tau. I'd been dabbling in this anime-inspired army for a while, I had a few Devilfish and some Crisis Suits, but didn't enjoy the codex too much so I was eagerly waiting for the new 6th edition update to come around. On the front cover is the new hotness, the Riptide, first among many new releases. Speaking of which...

New Releases - The Tau get a huge amount of new kits, from the two flyers, the previously mentioned Riptide, a redesigned Broadside suit, and a host of new characters (including the finecast, and sadly mono-pose commander). The update to Farsight is great, and the new plastic Cadre Fireblade is a neat little kit. One of my favourites though is the new Pathfinder box. Loads of cool options, a few new drones, can't fault it! There's also a load of stuff for the Hobbit.

Forge World show off all their new Necron goodies for Imperial Armour 12: The Fall of Orpheus. I've had the book since the Open Day and it is epic. They've got photos of the Night Shroud Bomber, the Tomb Citadel and the Sentry Pylons which are all lovely kits of kit for any budding Overlord.

Army of the Month - Because it's a 40k month, the army is Beastmen for Fantasy. They look nicely converted and painted, I'm just not a fan of the army generally.

Jervis Johnson - I really enjoyed this article. It's the first of two parts on having a Games Master as part of your games, and what that could bring to the table (ahem!). Nothing ground breaking, but plenty of food for thought and putting a different spin on things.

Battle Report - The new Tau test their metel against the Tyranids on some great looking terrain (including Forge World's city scape boards). Both the armies look great, in unusual colour schemes, however the look of the battle doesn't really come across in the photos. They included a GM surprise of an Inquisitor popping up towards the end of the game too. I'm sure I'm not giving the game away at this late stage by saying the Tau won.

Blanchitsu - More beautiful minis from the mind of John Blanche. The Nurgle Lord makes yet another appearance, but there's great use of the chaos cultists.

Rise of the Battlesuits - A great little article about the different types of suit available to the Tau. Led by Adam Troke with heavy input from Jes Goodwin that's lots of great information, although they missed the other two stealth suit types! They put in the FW XV-9 but didn't include any of the -8 variants available which is a bit of a fail in my opinion.

Hall of Fame - The Khorne lord on Juggernaut. Not the actual classic, the recent remake. Not worthy at all. Please start using this section for actual classics, not as another chance to show recent releases again.

Parade Ground - Part 4 of the 2012 Golden Demon coverage. There's some incredible entries here, like the Eldar Seer Council, and the Warlord Titan diorama.

Kit Bash - Apparently a 400th issue extravaganza! I'm not sure if 5 models on 5 pages an extravaganza makes, but oh well!

Parade Ground (again) - This time looking at monsters that some of the guys at FW and GW have painted, and a couple from readers.

Battle Ground - A look at how the WD team built and painted the gaming table for this month's battle report. It was great to see the effort they put in to making a cool table, something that I feel often gets overlooked, with people using table cloths, green sheets etc. It was also refreshing to see the citadel scenery painted in a different colour than normal. Some of it looks like it cost a bomb, with one photo showing someone just carving up a perfectly good Devilfish to make debris!

Paint Splatter - All kinds of alternate Tau paint schemes, some I remember from previous Codexes, others newer like the one featured in the battle report. There's also a look at how they painted some of the scenery from the board.

Jeremy Vetock - A tongue-in-cheek like at some of the superstitions of our game. Fun but pointless.

This Month In - Beth's Reaver Jetbikes look awesome, and there's a quick interview with legend Ian Livingstone to celebrate the big milestone this month. There's also a few snippets from previous editors of the magazine, however they miss out quite a few of the better known ones from the golden era.

In the design studio Vetock comes back to talk us through his Tau codex, and two chaps tell us about the Sun Shark / Razorshark. The FW section looks great but was already out of date, and in Black Library corner there's an incredible looking Dark Angel Contemptor Dreadnought.

In the back there's a shot of the FW Thunderhawk which got everyone on the forums wetting themselves about a plastic one which was hilarious. I hope Jes and co do that kind of thing on purpose.

I really enjoyed this issue. I liked how they tied most of the sections together. Each one revolving around the battle report, from how the table was built, to how it was all painted, to Jervis' ideas about GM games. Blanchitsu was inspired, but the fourth month in a row of Golden Demon felt a bit flat. Keeping my bias for the Tau and Forge world's Necrons out of it, I'd give a 7/10. On to the next issue now!

Video update, and accompanying photos.

I just uploaded the latest video in my grand return to youtube. I say grand, it's not that grand, although I am enjoying making them! Without further ado, here it is...

And here's a couple of photos from it. As I mentioned in the video the base for the Dreadknight is from Roy at Fantascape, who makes amazing resin bases.

The next in my series of catch up reviews, and it's a fantasy release for a change. Let's see how this one stacks up.

New Releases - High Elves this time and some lovely looking kits. the two Phoenixes look cool, if a little static. The Lothern Skycutter is really nice, and another chance for GW to use the new longer flight stand. There's also a load of new regular size models, but none of the core choices have been redone, and that's the problem I have with getting into fantasy at the moment. All the new bits of kit are gret, but if the core of your army looks shit then why bother. I'm avoiding fantasy for this reason until they sort it out.

Army of the Month - Mark Bedford, the man behind the incredible Legion Reconnaisance Squad (and also the underwhelming World Eater Rampagers) shows off his Blood Angels army. As you'd expect it's packed with Forge World goodies including a Storm Eagle and a Spartan! Tucked away in the spine there's a small but wonderful ad-Mech unit, and I spotted one of the space Hulk terminators in there too.

Jervis Johnson - Following on from last months chat about GM games Jervis ties it all up. The thing I took away from this was that it's a way to inspire projects, in much the same way the Imperial Armour books can inspire projects by doing the story telling for you. After turning my hand to some narrative gaming I'm a firm believer in this method of gaming now.

Battle Report - High Elves v Ogre Kingdoms. It's strange how most Fantasy battle grounds look quite uninspired, considering how good a lot of the scenery is for this system. Maybe it's to do with my head not adjusting to the space requirements of the game, or the fact I've never understood why there is grass on a battlefield! Turns out it was a draw.

Armchair General - Adam Troke tells us of his love for the Dark Angels. I wish I shared his enthusiasm. I bought them, played one or two games but haven't felt particularly inspired by them. Maybe it's because they were eclipsed by the Tau so swiftly. There's not much in the way of tactics, just a few pointers.

Blanchitsu - Blanche shows us the work of a chap called Julian Bayliss. His work looks very slick, I wish there had been more pages of this.

Hall of Fame - The fucking Helbute?! What the fuck is this mono-pose turd doing here? It's actually not a bad model, but they've got to be shitting me if it's anywhere near worthy of the hall of fame. It was chosen by Edgar Skomorowski, a Forge World designer, he must've been smoking too much resin when he was asked.

The Time of Dragons - Troke and Ward take a look and Warhammer dragons. There's some nice art, and an interview with Trish Carden who's designed quite a few fantasy gribblys over the years.

Parade Ground - Focusing on Dreadnoughts this month.

Kit Bash - A really cool looking Altar of Chaos using a Maulerfiend, and some interesting cultists from Mark Bedford. He's all over this issue!

Parade Ground - A selection of very impressive looking Warhound Titans and a couple of Reavers. One day they will be mine!
There's then yet more Golden Demon photos, this time from Japan, although no sign of Hugo / Ichiban Paintings lovely Storm Eagle conversion.

Paint Splatter - All kinds of High Elf techniques. Plenty of transferable tips here.

Jeremy Vetock - Almost returning to normality after last months bizarreness, we get a look into how Vetock views the collecting side of his hobby, and how it's changed over time. I'm much the same, I have the money and the ideas, I just lack the time to get anything meaningful done.

This Month In - Bethan's hair has changed from blue to green, and there's even more Dreadnoughts on show. The Design studio talk about the Elves, I'm glad they are including more of these designer's notes. It adds more weigh to the magazine.
FW show off the Fellglaive, or the Glaive as it's now known, and some nice looking Night Lords from Will Hayes.

Nothing ground-breaking in this installment then. The hall of fame left a sour taste in my metaphorical mouth, one that was only overcome by Mark Bedford, John Blanche and Jervis, all quite small sections of the mag. Because of this I'll award a respectably average but not great 5/10.

Eldar Time! I've never collected this ancient race but they've always appealed, from way back in 2nd edition when my mates Harlequins used to kick my Genestealer Cult ass, through to the release of the Phantom Titan and the cool stuff that came with the Doom of Mymeara. Let's see what they had in store for us this time round...

New Releases - Completely dominated by the very impressive and very expensive Wraithknight, there's a whole host of new kits. It was cool to see the Wraithguard getting an update in plastic. As well as the standard huge kit they also released the compulsory flyer, and a few characters. I don't understand why they only do one plastic character each release and do the rest in finecast, maybe it's budget. One thing I think they dropped the ball on is not releasing any aspect warriors in plastic.
In Forge World news they released the Breacher and Recon Squads, both excellent sculpts. The final stand out unit is the Mechanicum Thallaxii Squad.

Army of the Month - They seem to just be using GW staff for this article now which is a real shame. This month it's Nick Bayton from Warhammer World. He's got a very impressive Orc and Goblin army with a very heavy Night Goblin theme and a literally sick giant.

Jervis Johnson - In some peoples eyes reading this literally it could be taken as a pile of nonsense, but if you think about it, what I think he's hinting at in a roundabout way is that if your units show certain traits on the table you could try incorporating it into some background for your army. I might be reading too deep into it though!

Battle Report - Eldar v Necrons. Once again a really cinematic battle, with some great terrain including the FW Tomb Citadel, C'tan on Avatar action and a win for the army of the month.

Armchair General - Featuring the purple Tau army from a couple of issues ago, and some tips on how Dan Harden builds a list, with hints at synergy. There's missed opportunity with no crisis suit loadouts etc, but it's not a bad read.

Blanchitsu - Another guest spot from Mikko Luoma. He's used all kind of bits here, including what looks like a goblin from the Hobbit game. There's a converted Cairn Wraith in there and possibly a nurgle lord.

Hall of Fame - It's an improvement on last month for sure. The Skaven Screaming Bell is a nice looking kit, and looks like it would be fun to paint. They reference concept sketches but don't show them.

Culture of the Eldar - Jes Goodwin, mastermind of the Eldar esthetic, and Phil Kelly who's done a few number of Codexes for them, talk about the flavour of the month. There's talk of the different craftworlds and a look at the new decal sheet.

War Diary - A new section, looking at the preparation for the Armies on Parade competition this year. Plenty of writing about the upcoming projects explaining their concepts.

Parade Ground - Warhammer regiments this time. There's some lovely looking units and great ideas to add individuality.

Kit Bash - Featuring an absolutely mental Land Raider conversion, it's even got Volkite weaponry on it! I'm not a huge fan of the extra wings on the Fire Prism but the paint job is good.

Paint Splatter - Focusing on how to paint Eldar, covering a few of the different Craftworlds, and some details such as gems Aspect Warriors. The wraithbone on the knight looks amazing. They also include a few tips for night goblins from the army of the month.

Jeremy Vetock - How to justify your hobby purchases! An interesting read into someone elses plastic habit.

This Month In - Andrew shows some of his new Death Guard which look great, Jes and Oliver from the design team talk about Eldar release. There are some lovely Inquisition minis from a chap called Jon Flindall and a unique unit of Deathwing from Tammy.
From Forge World we get a shit load of cool stuff. The Dread Maw is a nasty looking beast, and Legion Praetor is one of the best looking marines ever, and there's another shot of this years event only Warrior Priest.

This issue was a fun read, with quite a few nuggets of awesomeness. There's wasn't so much annoying rubbish in it as last month. The This Month In section really needs to be expanded, I don't mind it staying in the back but I want to see a lot more of what the WD team are working on, tips or tactics from them, ideas for scenarios that got rejected for the battle report. I'm struggling to rate this issue, as I said it was fun, but slightly vaccuous, so I think I'll go for a high 6/10!

Fantascape Gothic Ruins resin base painting tutorial.

Those of you following my blog or twitter will no doubt have read me banging on and on about Fantascape's resin bases. I think they are great, they're a good price, and the quality is top notch. Delivery is fast, and Roy is a great guy to chat to on Twitter. Anyways, enough gushing, on with the show.

If you'd like to check out the Gothic Ruins range I'd click here. I settled on these for my Heresy era Ultramarines and they look like what I'd imagine the streets of Macragge or any other planet of Ultramar to look like. In this tutorial, which is in no way ground breaking, I'm using the 40mm options on my Cataphractii. It's a speedy process, in fact I think I spent more time making the tutorial than I actually spent painting all five bases.

So there it is, cool looking bases in a few easy steps. I'm hoping to get a few more tutorials done soon so stay tuned. Cheers for looking and feel free to drop me any feedback!

Howdy folks, well I didn't quite finish catching up on the issues I'd missed in my blogging hiatus, but they'll be following shortly I hope. This issue feels like it's been a long time coming, it got leaked so early this time so much of this was not a surprise to anyone. Let's see what they got going on...

New Releases - Dominated by the new Space Marines Codex and the Centurions. They've got a huge amount of stick, but I like them. Yeah they go against all previous lore, but sometimes shit just happens. The devastator versions are cooler than the assault variety in my opinion, and you definitely need to put their helmets on, but other than that they're pretty cool. Underslung guns are cool, the Grav-Cannon is cool, the mohawk helmet is cool.
The new Tactical squad box also looks great, I'll be picking one up at some point once I'm burnt out on my heresy project. Sternguard and Vanguard get brand new plastic kits. I loved the old Sternguard, and it's a relief to see the new ones are every bit as awesome. I'm less convinced by the Vanguard but it looks like they have some nice bits options.
Two rhino variants have also been released, the Stalker and the Hunter are new Anti-Air weapons platforms, I think I'll need to see them in real life to form a definitely opinion, but the bulky sides are nice.
There's new plastic characters galore too, the librarian is the pick of the bunch, he's got a beard and a robo-baby flying around him. The captain is a glorified AoBR model, and the Chaplain is very Chaplainy. The only drawback is it's £18 for one fucking model, that's a bit too high even for me!
The codex looks great and it's bigger than the others, so of course that means that GW are charging more for it. This will probably be the only thing I'll pick up for now as I continue to try and clear some of my backlog of models.

Also released this month is War Zone: Damnos. It's only 20 quid and is an apocalypse expansion. As I'm a huge Ultramarines and Necrons fan I'll be grabbing this for my own 'black library'. I don't expect it will but it would be cool if they'd included some regular size missions to fight a whole Damnos campaign. Guess I'll have to have a go myself.

In Forge World news they are almost up to date, showing the meaty Legion Glaive, the new IA Apoc update and the event only Davinite Serpent Lodge Priest which I'll be picking up in just over a month's time.
There's a double page spread on Fulgrim which is a brilliant sculpt. I keep to pull my finger out and finish Angron first!

Army of the Month - Owen Patten's chaos Ogre's. Predictably because it's a 40k month the army is for fantasy. There are so many cool conversions and I spotted a FW Skin Wolf in there.

Jervis Johnson - An interesting look at how Jervis writes rules mechanics. It started off about the Altar of War series, but soon meandered into a general chat about nothing much.

Battle Report - Black Templars v Nurgle Chaos Marines and Demons. Andrew Kenrick brings the Death Guard, and Adam Troke supplies the Demons. This army looks fantastic, and it's making me rethink painting my Dark Vengeance set as Black Legion or DG. I just can't choose! The new Hunter took out a Heldrake,  and the Storm Raven was still running around at the end of the game. No one had really claimed the relic so it went to Chaos winning on secondaries.

Battle Ground - Looking at some of the stand out models from Throne of Skulls. Loads of nicely painted models, and not a Nurgle lord in sight!

Battle Ground - A look at the Apocalypse board from the Damnos war zone book. There's some great necron tiles made from fantasy movement trays, definitely an idea for the future to tie in with the Tomb Citadel.

Hall of Fame - They really need to sort this article out, the Arachnarok Spider is nice, but not a fucking classic. Grr it annoys me so much!

Armour Through the Ages - A similar article to the Tau battlesuit one a few months back showing the evolution of space marine armour. They've used the GW models for this rather than the Forge World release but it's a nice summary. I wish they'd release more parts for the Mark 8 Errant armour, it's the coolest mark by far imo, with corvus close behind.

War Diary - Continuing the progress on a bunch of Armies on Parade boards. The War Altar built from the Garden of Morr set is nice, and the colour scheme on the Greatswords is one of the nicest I've seen.

Kit Bash - A closer look at some of the options in the new Tactical Squad box. There's so much variety now each marine really can look unique which is something I've always liked and tried to do with my smurfs. Mark Bedford's Astral Claws look particularly nice.

Paint Splatter - Predominately how to paint Ultramarines, from drybrushing to edge highlighting. A few weathering techniques thrown in. It's fairly basic, but also very comprehensive in what it covers.

Jeremy Vetock - A look at what makes a good 40k player. And it's not about how to smash face, it's about how to have a good game, such as a nice looking board to play on, a well painted army etc. I think this is the dream for many players. I've almost got a fully painted set of terrain, but I'm always a bit sad when I have to field armies that are no where near painted. One day soon I hope to use only painted models to enhance the experience.

This Month In - The biggest news of the issue, Bethan is leaving! Sad times as the first of the new group to fly the nest. Adam Troke has been trying to decide on a chapter for his marines, I'd go Minotaurs all the way!
The design Studio talk about the Asartes release specifically the new kits, and the insight is great to read. Cruddace talks codex, and Kevin Chin talks artwork.
The FW page is amazing this month. There's a preview of book 2 for the Horus Heresy, called Massacre. A spelling mistake, it's a Sicaran not a Sicarian Battle Tank! And a look at some more special characters. Erebus, despite being a total douchenozzle looks incredible, so much detail. And the WIP shot of Kor Phaeron looks like he's coming along nicely.

There's been no Armchair General or Blanchitsu this month but their absence hasn't been too noticeable. I wish they'd drop Hall of Fame instead though. It's a well-rounded issue with some great bits, some ok bits, and not too many bad bits. Overall I'd say 7/10.
